This is a fairy tale read that will keep you turning the pages.

 

The Presence, A Ghost Story by Eve Bunting. Review by Leanna Brooks

Guilt-stricken seventeen-year-old Catherine, who feels responsible for her best friend’s death, is sent away to her grandmother’s in Pasadena for Christmas while her parents are away in Europe. While she is there, she meets this boy, Noah, at church who says to her that he has talked to her best friend and can get Catherine in touch with her. The strange thing is is that no one else seems to see Noah when he is around. Stranger yet, Catherine is approached by an elderly woman who warns her not to go back to the church. And to make matters worse, an old diary and rumors of missing local girls may just reveal what Noah is really up to.

“The Presence” is a quick, suspenseful read. And a true message that it sends is that love shall conquer all. Even the evil in one’s heart.

Hold Still - A Book Review By Melyssa Arner

Hacking Harvard by Robin Wasserman. Reviewed by Melyssa Arner

In Robin Wasserman's Hacking Harvard, you have three geniuses who set out to hack the admissions system of one of America's highest ranking Ivy League Universities. Not only are these boys in it for the glory, but also a large sum of cash. They have the hack, the crew, the plan, and pretty soon, the prize. But the stakes might be much higher than they thought. In Wasserman's own words, "You don't need to be brilliant, you just need a plan."

This book is an easy and enjoyable read.

Maggie Stiefvater's, The Scorpio Races

Without long descriptive passages or flowery language, Maggie Stiefvater masterfully illustrates a world so vivid and real, you can't help but to be pulled into it.

What impressed me most about her writing is the strength of her characters. Puck and Sean, the two protagonists, are so well drawn. They are believable and true and their story unfolds through alternating chapters told in first person narrative. I loved the two points of view and the way they moved the story seamlessly.

This is a story that lingers. The mood is consistent throughout the entirety of the book, the story grows stronger with each turned page, and the end does not disappoint.

Every now and then a book comes along in which the language pulls you so far into the story that you are no longer reading words but watching it play out in your mind. The Scorpio Races is such a book.

 

Congratulations Riley

Riley Ivol was awarded a scholarship by the Beaver County School Librarians to help her pursue a career in library and information science.  The scholarship is open to any high school senior from Beaver County with a 3.00 or above grade point average.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE AT BCCTC

Brieanna Colvin, Chelsey Vedro, Kassy Leinwand, Zachary Collins, DeVonte Jones, Wayne Kress, Zachary Groves and Adam Komraus achieved perfect attendance during BCC&TC's Perfect Attendance Program.  The 90 day program began on September 12, 2011 and ended February 27, 2012.  These eight students were recognized at BCC&TC's Perfect Attendance Brunch on April 18th.

CV Brings home 1st, 2nd, and 6th Place At The Beaver County Envirothon

The first place team members are Matthew Kline, Matthew Colaluca, Levi Johnson, Levi Seese, and David Shipman.   

They will now move on to the State Envirothon which will be held at the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown Campus later this month. 

Finishing closely behind them in second place was the team of Jocelyn Sudar, Valeriya Bowen, Mikayla Wilson, Rosalie Maccaglia, and Chelsea Zagorski. 

The sixth place team members are Courtney Yu, Andrew Kirkwood, Eryn Yuran, Brittany Fleming, and Breanna Nardilli. 

Congratulations to our Central Valley teams that competed at this year’s Envirothon, and especially to Mr. Emler, their sponsor.

Yesterday's Skype visit with Maggie Stiefvater was FAB-U-LOUS!

Empty chairs wait in anticipation...

Then, voila! As if by magic, Maggie Stiefvater appears in our library- live via Skype.  She is witty, endearing, and completely entertaining. She even gave us a scoop! We all knew that her Shiver book is being made into a movie, but we didn't know The Scorpio Races will soon be a movie too.  (If you haven't read it yet, you should. Stop in, we have two copies.)

 

A library filled is a beautiful sight!  Fifty-two students, each having read Maggie's books, signed up for this event. Even Mr. Mendicino and Mr. McCreary joined in the fun.       

This awesome event was made possible by a grant from the Central Valley Education Foundation.  The CVEF's continued support to our high school library is greatly appreciated.

We'd also like to thank Mrs. Amy Patterson in the Middle School for all her help in making the connection for us.

Yep, Matt is one lucky guy!

A good time was had by all.  We can't wait to do it again!

NHS Raises Money For American Cancer Society

During the month of March, our NHS members sold $1800 worth of daffodils, wallflowers, yellow bracelets and raffle tickets to help fight cancer. 

Yellow is the color of Spring.  It's also the color of hope. 

Congratulations NHS members for taking the time to do something so worthwhile.  You really shine!

Senior Band Members Place At The PMEA Region I Band Festival

Three senior band members auditioned at the PMEA Region I Band Festival held in Norwin last week and placed high enough to advance to the PMEA All-State festival.  The festival willbe held in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, April 18th through the 21st. 

Christina Gonzalez and Danielle Gonzalez will be participating in the All-State Concert Band.  

Katie Patterson will be performing with the All-State Wind Ensemble. 

It is a great honor for all three of these students to represent Central Valley in the highest level of performance in the state. 

Congratulations girls!
